In the Garden...

Pruning and Preparing Trees

We learned that young trees need help growing into a well-formed fruit bearing tree. Our trees were pruned to eliminate young branches from growing inward, but to grow outward. Two branches are being helped in the process of growing branches out and away from each other. This is our apple tree.

Ripe strawberries are beautiful and flavorful, just not abundant enough for any one culinary class.

"MARCH GLADNESS" Here are some of the late winter crops!

Third grade garden with broccoli and strawberries.

Third grade gardens with cabbages for a king.

Early mornings in March

FEBRUARY 25TH. Today we planted tomatoes, radishes, carrots, eggplant, and lettuce. The weather was very windy and unfortunately several fourth graders got soil in their little lovely eyes. They were smart and knew to flush out the eye with fresh water. Today the fourth graders also mixed in a rich potting soil with the garden soil that is in the bed. Now the soil is richer. We also fertilized the new vegetables. Some people had more fun than others.

Hey, guess what? The apple tree has flowers! Yea!

OCTOBER STRAWBERRY PATCH

What strawberries we had were pretty good.

The gardens are starting to pick up with transplants and seedlings growing about. We have planted apple, nectarine, peach, and avocado trees, as well as blueberries and strawberries. The blackberry bush is waiting to be planted!

There are tomatoes, cabbage, okra, peppers, basil, rosemary, mint, cantaloupe and more coming up!

  2. There is a lemon tree waiting to be planted and a broadcast loquat tree that will have be transplanted before too much longer. The weekend rain is welcome for the growing process, but it will slow down the planting process. All things in good time.

We will need a trellis for the blackberry and maybe some walking stones into the garden. And a bench. The children will need somewhere to sit while watering during the dry spells.

Please post comments or recommendations to the site. We are in the beginning stages still and advice is most welcome.

  5. It was raining so we did not get to plant the new vegetables. We have tomatoes, lettuce and two other plants. Last week we planted carrots, squash, radishes, and green beans. We use toilet paper rolls to create seedling containers. Our teacher found the idea on Pinterest.
